Applications are now being accepted for an exciting summer opportunity that might interest some of our TJH students. The Fort Smith Museum of History and the United States Marshals Museum are partnering to lead a student-created exhibit on the history of three Fort Smith neighborhoods, in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of the city of Fort Smith 2017-18. The project is open to students in 7th-11th grades (2016-17 school year). Students will meet once a week during the summer (Tuesdays 9am-12pm) to do research in the three neighborhoods – Belle Grove, Fishback, and Fort Chaffee- then design and build the exhibit at the Fort Smith Museum of History. Research and exhibit prep will include neighborhood tours, photography, creative writing, artwork, and more, and students will have access to the collections of the FSMH, learning what it means to do curatorial work. Following an opening reception on August 26th, the exhibit will stay on display at the FSMH through December, allowing students to show off their work!
The application and meeting schedule are linked here. Please share with any students you think would be interested! Applications are due by April 19th, and students will be notified by May 5th if they have been selected for the program. Up to 30 students will be accepted.
